Young’s Fish Still Fresh As Ever…

After 39 years in the businesses of selling fresh fish and shellfish in Suffolk and Essex, the blue and white stripes on the awning over Young’s Fish stalls in Ipswich, Colchester and Chelmsford are practically iconic.

Sorely missed by customers when they closed for the first six weeks of lockdown, you’ll be pleased to know the stalls are back and Michael, Lucy and their sons have introduced a new delivery service which covers Shotley peninsula and a five-mile radius of Ipswich (order on Monday for delivery on Wednesday).

Customers visiting the stalls are adhering to strict social distancing rules but those who need to make a quick exit can place orders for collection.

“Our customers have been incredible and we’re delighted to be back,” says Michael. “Young’s is a family business, always has been, so having to close for a few weeks was very frustrating, especially as we have so many regular customers who have been coming to us for years and years. It’s great to see them all again now.”

Michael, originally from Lowestoft, set the business up in 1981. His wife Lucy joined him in 1990 and they relocated to Ipswich in 1997. Since then his three sons, Tom, Pete and James, have joined the business, most recently James who has just completed his A Levels and has been the driving force behind the new home delivery service.

“Tom, our eldest, was the first to join me,” explains Michael. “He is passionate about developing the business and has been buying directly from Billingsgate for more than six years. He has also made numerous contacts across the country and we now also buy fish from many coastal towns. I like to think it’s all down to me, but the quality and variety of what we now offer is really down to him. Just don’t tell him I said so!”

The growing demand for good quality fresh fish keeps the team on their toes. Even granny gets involved.

“We have a brilliant team and it’s just great to be back doing what we all love. I’m really excited about the new delivery service which we’re very keen to develop. People travel from all over the county to purchase our fish but now we can delivery to those who either can’t travel or who choose not to.”

So look for the blue and white awning next time you’re in Ipswich, Colchester or Chelmsford or see below for details of how to place your order in advance for collection or home delivery.
