Summer in Suffolk Museums

Got plans for the summer? Kickstart your adventure with a visit to Suffolk Museums.

Summer in Suffolk Museums has been running since 2016 and showcases the fantastic variety of events, activities and workshops that take place in museums in Suffolk over the school holidays. Most museum events and activities that are part of the campaign are either low-cost or completely free. Suffolk Museums are home to some amazing heritage buildings and outdoor spaces. Many sites also offer free parking and refreshments or a chance to unwind with a family picnic in the sun.

This year, Summer in Suffolk Museums will be forming part of the celebrations of The Festival of Suffolk which is shining a spotlight on all aspects of Suffolk life and featuring events and activities up until October. Come and join in the festivities for the county’s biggest community event in history.

Highlights this year include Animal Invasion at Ipswich Museum, where visitors can come and see live animals at the museums across three days. There will be Cute & Fluffy on one day, Reptiles & Amphibians on the next and Minibeasts on the final day. Which ones will you go to? Mid Suffolk Light Railway Museum are hosting Steam Railway & Steampunk Day which will be a day of wild and wonderful costumes from the Steampunk fraternity. Visitors will also have the opportunity to take a take a step back in time with a ride on the museum’s steam locomotives. Prefer a different mode of transport? Why not head to Ipswich Transport Museum for the chance to experience life as a firefighter with Ride a Fire Engine Day. Hear bells ringing and sirens screaming as you travel in one of the museum’s magnificent fire engines. Lovers of stories should head to West Stow Anglo Saxon Museums where re-enactment group ‘Ealdfaeder’ will be demonstrating storytelling, games playing and other fun activities. Whatever your preference, make a visit to Suffolk Museums this summer.
