Suffolk Libraries celebrate bedtime stories Pyjamarama events
Suffolk Libraries will be changing into their PJs for Pyjamarama events across the county from June 3rd to the 9th. This week-long event was created by BookTrust to celebrate bedtime stories and their importance in learning and development.
Last week, BookTrust reported that 54% of parents are swapping bedtime stories for tech. Pyjamarama is a celebration of the stories and rhymes that have been enjoyed by children as bedtime stories and to share this love with the community with fun-filled events and activities.
This year, the book chosen for Pyjamarama is ‘Car, Car, Truck, Jeep’ by Katrina Charman and Nick Sharratt, published by Bloomsbury.
On BookTrust’s website, they state: “There’s nothing quite like a bedtime story. It’s a magical, joyful time for little ones and their families. The campaign aims to help every child experience the wonder of a bedtime story by encouraging families to share books with their little ones each night.”
On Friday 7th June, BookTrust will be encouraging children and adults to wear pyjamas for a day in celebration and to raise awareness of the importance of reading to children in the night-time. Suffolk Libraries wholeheartedly supports this campaign.
Krystal Vittles, Head of Service Delivery added: “Books at bedtime help develop good bedtime habits. Getting small children into healthy bedtime habits is hard at the best of times and books can be a good tool to bring the child down to a place of calm and comfort which are the perfect conditions for sleep. This ultimately has a positive impact on the adult as the child will be ready to sleep.”
“We know that reading is the biggest influence when it comes to positive life outcomes, so reading at night builds good habits that can last a lifetime for a child.”
Suffolk Libraries have also released their own recommended book list of children’s bedtime stories, which you can find on their website.
