Stowmarket Striders Support John Clark’s 48:48:48 Challenge
Stowmarket Striders, Club of the Year in the England Athletics East of England awards 2020, was honoured to support John Clark and his team in his monumental effort to complete 48 marathons in 48 days in 48 counties.
In any feat of this nature, forward planning is of the essence and their captains, Andrew Long and Juliet Garnham, were out on bike support with John, having spent time preparing the route to John’s requirements for the 17th of the
48 marathons in Suffolk.
Starting and finishing at Mid-Suffolk Leisure Centre (Everyone Active), the route takes a circular course through much of the countryside around Stowmarket, encompassing parts of their five annual races from the Scenic Seven Remembrance Sunday run, through their half-marathon route, to their cross country and Friday Five routes around Haughley and then back through Stowmarket Town Centre and across the recreation ground to take in the Golden Mile.
Stowmarket Town Mayor, Cllr Keith Scarff, counted John down to the start alongside the Chairman of Mid-Suffolk District Council, Cllr Paul Ekpenyong. The team are grateful to Everyone Active for their support and for providing facilities on the day. Also, to Striders’ publicity officer Kim Drain who led on promotion.
Frank Moggan, a great ambassador for Striders Club who still conjures up excellent race successes in his seventies as a runner and triathlete, joined John on the final leg of the run from his home in Haughley to the finish line.
All this time and effort has been and will be replicated in 47 other counties around the country by other running clubs. The team wishes John well going onwards with this incredible challenge. On completion, John is hoping to raise £48,000.00 to help alleviate child poverty.
