Sproughton Community Shop: Something For Everyone

Those of you who are regular contributors to In Touch will know that pieces must be submitted well in advance of publication. This means that events that seem quite recent at the time of writing, appear quite distant at the point of publication. On February 26 we said goodbye to our manager, Wendy Lavington. The Star published a piece with super photos, which we had hoped to reproduce here but copyright intervened, so the following is entirely of our own creation.

Manager of Sproughton Community Shop Retires
At the end of February, Wendy Lavington, who has been the manager and master of ceremonies for Sproughton Community shop since it opened in March 2010, is retiring.

Wendy has been at the heart of the shop project since around 2007 when the plan to develop a village shop began. It is fair to say that she has been central to the success of the venture from the word go. Think of it – a tiny shop sits in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle of Tescos, Morrisons and Asda, yet where we still are.

When the shop opened, none of us had any experience of retail grocery, let alone running a business. This did not deter Wendy. She is blessed with a knack for shopping and Sproughton Shop has amassed an extraordinary range of stock, from mousetraps to champagne, and everything else you can think of in between.

Wendy has particularly concentrated on sourcing local produce, giving the shop a special Suffolk flavour that has proven to be particularly relevant during periods when the major outlets had interrupted supply lines. She quickly grasped the digital administration required for stock control, pricing and wastage, and had all the information required for good management of a business at her fingertips. Her generous and upbeat nature has also created good relationships with all our suppliers who have been loyal to us over the years.

Community shops also depend on the goodwill and loyalty of their volunteers. Wendy has been the MC of many volunteer quiz nights, which she authored, wonderful evenings of hilarity and pleasure. The network of volunteers was new to Sproughton and has been a marvelous support to many in the village during the pandemic. Many new friendships have flourished and been nurtured under her friendly eye.

Wendy will be greatly missed and a hard act to follow, but we have every confidence that our new manager, Tracy Booth, will keep the spirited business of the shop alive. We wish Wendy a happy and long retirement.
