Southwold Arts Centre Summer Theatre Season Kicks Off!

Jill Freud’s well-known Southwold Summer Theatre has been entertaining audiences at The Southwold Arts Centre every summer since 1937.

The season was taken over by Matthew Townshend Productions in 2019.

“We’re thrilled to be able to push ahead with this year’s season,” says Matthew. “My association with the theatre in Southwold goes back a long way, to a time when I appeared in the season myself in both 1974 and 1975. “It must always continue. Quite apart from everything else, so many artists began their careers in Southwold.”

Theatre on the Coast also hopes to be able to mount events on Southwold Common in late July/early August.

“We are so proud to be a part of this incredible community.” Matthew continued, “We cannot wait to welcome our audiences back to Southwold this year!”

Hello Norma Jeane
By Dylan Costello

Starring our Theatre on the Coast patron Vicki Michelle (‘Allo, ‘Allo). First seen at the King’s Head Theatre 2014. Spring 2003, a new war is coming and Essex grandmother Lynnie has escaped from her nursing home to fly 8000 miles across the Atlantic to Hollywood.

There, she holes up in a rundown motel, awaiting the right moment to reveal to the world her deepest secret – that she is Marilyn Monroe, alive and well after faking her death over forty years before. When grandson Joe turns up to take her home, he finds himself questioning reality. Is Lynnie really Marilyn? Or just an old lady who wanted to avoid ending her days in a nursing home?

As time starts running out, Joe’s search for the truth tests his self-worth – and his love for his Grandma – to the limit in this funny drama that is full of surprises.
