Kesgrave Allotment & Leisure Gardeners

Before I wrote this article I looked up what I’d written last October and realised this year feels a bit like Groundhog Day because yet again my entire sweetcorn crop was totally destroyed by rats and yet again I had a bumper crop of courgettes (so yet more chutney!).

However, in an attempt to ring the changes and not get stuck in a rut (excuse the pun!), this summer I tried growing butternut squash for the first time. I just planted some seeds from one I bought at the supermarket and they produced very healthy, sturdy plants yielding about 15 squashes. I’ve been advised they can be stored for up to a year, which is fabulous as they’re not cheap in the shops. In a similar vein, I also planted a new crop called Pastinaca, not realising that’s just the scientific name for parsnips which I’d already planted in about three beds!

Sadly, due to Covid we weren’t able to hold our open day this year, but on a lighter note, the allotment site looks the best it ever has as people turned to gardening during lockdown for relaxation, exercise and a change of scenery.

Now’s the time to sow over-winter onions and broad beans, as well as winter lettuce, hardy peas, garlic, spring cabbage and rhubarb crowns. Good luck with any pumpkins you’ve been growing which may be put to good use at the end of this month.
