Free soil improver available – come and dig in!

East Suffolk residents are invited to bring a shovel and help themselves to free soil improver at an event next week.

Taking place at Sizewell Sports and Social Club in Leiston on Friday 6 May, the ‘Shovel It Yourself’ event is being organised by East Suffolk Council, Leiston Town Council and Net Zero Leiston as part of International Compost Awareness Week.

Waste collected through the garden waste collection service in East Suffolk is processed into soil improver by Biogen and some of this soil improver will be made available for residents to collect.

Cllr James Mallinder, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for the Environment said: “Our garden waste scheme is an excellent option to help people to dispose of their garden waste and providing this soil improver to residents closes the loop from garden to green bin and back to the garden again. We would also encourage people to try home composting as this is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way of disposing of kitchen and garden waste and there is help available for those wanting to learn more.”

Caroline Rinder, on behalf of Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council and Net Zero Leiston said: “Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council are very pleased to support this event in Leiston and would encourage residents to take the opportunity to load up their wheelbarrows and have some soil improver for their gardens and allotments. Composting is a great way to deal with garden waste and reduce carbon and supports our Net Zero initiatives for the town.”

Information will also be available at the event about home composting and the discounted home composting systems which are available to Suffolk residents.

International Compost Awareness Week runs from 1 – 7 May 2022 and raises awareness about the benefits of home composting. Composting food and garden waste at home is free, great for your plants and also reduces the amount of waste being sent for processing.

The events runs from 9.30am to 3pm at Sizewell Sports and Social Club, King Georges Avenue, Leiston, IP16 4JX.

Residents are asked to bring a shovel and a suitable container in which to take away the soil improver. Residents are also welcome to take some for family members or neighbours who would otherwise find it difficult to access the event. Small trailers are permitted but if you are within walking distance and can take your soil improver away in a wheelbarrow, please consider leaving the car at home.
