Fitness Challenge Raises More Than £5,000 To Support Suffolk Families!
Local family support charity, Home-Start in Suffolk launched a new fundraising campaign – The February Fitness Challenge raising more than £5000 to help families across the county.
Like many other charities, Home-Start in Suffolk has been impacted by the current pandemic, seeing not only a significant rise in family referrals and an ever-increasing level of need across Suffolk, but the forced cancellation of major fundraising events has seen them having to create new and inventive ways to help raise vital funds. To kick start 2021 the fundraising team created a new virtual event – the February Fitness Challenge – inviting individuals to sign up to cover a virtual distance through running, walking, cycling or however they wished and to gain sponsorships for their efforts.
“We have been delighted by the enthusiasm of those that signed up!” Said Eve Thomson of Home-Start in Suffolk Income Generation team. “One of our Ambassadors, Lady Clare Greenwell and her husband Edward signed up to the challenge raising an incredible £800! And Woodbridge based Freddie Alcock, a 24-year-old with downs syndrome who is passionate about Home-Start, raised more than £500 for his efforts, covering 100km over the month. Collectively all those involved covered more than 2000 miles and raised a fantastic £5000!”
This year, Home-Start in Suffolk have been nominated as the chosen charity for the Suffolk branch of housing developers ‘Persimmon Homes’ and as part of their pledge to support the charity a team of 12 staff members signed up to the fitness challenge raising almost £2000 towards the total!
Home-Start in Suffolk has been supporting Suffolk families for over 20 years and is instrumental in early intervention to prevent families reaching crisis point. Helping families as they navigate through challenges such as bereavement, long-term illness, domestic abuse, isolation, poor mental health, disabilities and so much more, Home-Start in Suffolk work alongside the statutory services and are highly respected amongst their partners and peers. The majority of their family referrals come through professional partners however families are able to self-refer too.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 Crisis, Home-Start in Suffolk has adapted their important volunteer support service to adhere to the physical distancing guidance, providing telephone and video call support for struggling families in place of the home-visiting service they are well known for. This is working well and there are plans afoot to add telephone support as an additional service as they gradually ease back in to providing Home-Visiting once restrictions allow.
Next year the team hopes that with even more planning and preparation they can build on this new fundraiser and encourage more members of the public to engage and join the challenge. For now though, they are focusing on created some more exciting fundraising events such as their popular virtual cocktail parties, an online art auction and online raffles.
