Bonitas Wholefoods Opening In Stowmarket
Good, honest, kind things are coming Stowmarket!
Having been vegetarian for over 20 years and vegan for the last three years, Oliver and Theresa Walters of Stowmarket (known by most as Ollie & Tree) are taking the plunge and following a long-held passion for good food, by opening their brand-new shop Bonitas Wholefoods. From the Latin, meaning “Good; Honest; Kind”, Bonitas Wholefoods will be situated at 2a Tavern St, Stowmarket, in one of the newly converted units next to Baldwins. You might already have seen the shopfront while the shop is being fitted out!
The shop will sell dried whole foods such as beans, pulses and nuts, a range of chilled and frozen foods and general eco-friendly household products such as; washing-up liquids, soaps, and cleaners. Refillable options will allow you to avoid packaging, so feel free to bring your own containers. Everything will be vegan!
Tree, who has lived in Stowmarket all her life and for the past nine years worked with Young Adults with learning disabilities, said: “I’m so excited…. and just a little bit nervous! Our products will be sourced as locally as possible, supporting other local businesses. Where this is not an option, we will ensure supply chains are as sustainable as possible. As vegans ourselves, everything we sell will be cruelty-free, ethical, with many organic options and with minimal plastic. Where we still have to buy plastic packaging for selected items, we will choose compostable options and if at times this is not possible to source, we welcome customers to bring their old packaging back and we will recycle it for them. We always choose to buy fair trade produce so all our goods will be certified fair trade wherever we can.”
Ollie, who runs his own media and advertising business, has, like so many, been a victim of the pandemic. “Having given this lots of thought and planning, we’ve decided what better thing to do than begin a new chapter and open an ethical wholefoods shop with ‘good, honest, kind values’? We regularly travel long distances for everyday ingredients and foods we love, sold through responsible, ethical supply chains, so to combat this we thought we’d open one ourselves! Stowmarket is a growing town and everyone we have spoken to is really supportive. Raising awareness of shopping locally and in a way that is kind to the planet is really important to us and we think it’s becoming more so for lots of people. The pandemic has given us all a chance to re-evaluate our lifestyles and think about how we behave, what we buy, and where we buy it from.”
To further their commitment to the environment, Bonitas Wholefoods have signed up to ‘1% for the Planet’. A global initiative starting in 2002, participating members pledge 1% of all sales. The money goes to help diverse environmental not-for-profits around the world. Bonitas Wholefoods will be registering with ‘Refill’, an initiative for retailers to offer tap water to anyone who needs it. Simply bring in your bottle and Ollie or Tree will happily fill it for you. They can’t wait to see you!
