Shotley Pier Update

Unsurprisingly, the plans for the pier proved to be the main topic of debate at the AGM. The original plans met with a somewhat mixed review and prompted one of our investors, John Bowen and a Director, Barrie Powell, to completely re-think the design of the proposed buildings on the pier. The Board considered this new approach favourably and agreed that they should be made available at the AGM where Barrie and John presented their ideas, rationale and drawings. Shotley Pier

Marian Pugh was chosen to place the final tile in the Shotley Pier fund board, which has now reached over £100,000. Marian has been a regular volunteer for the pier, with her artwork and her attendance to represent the project at public events, such as the Suffolk Show and her contribution to governance of the group. Marian’s idea of using the support struts under the pier, for the logo, led to the design of Shotley Pier’s admired logo. Shotley Pier is Suffolk’s only railway pier. Shotley Pier is a 122 year old Victorian working pier, sited on the peninsula, bounded by two beautiful rivers, River Orwell and River Stour. The area is a designated AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and UN Ramsar Convention Wetlands with protection from over-development. The pier has been for sale for several years. Boost For Pier Project

A community group’s bid to buy the 122-year-old Shotley Pier has been given a £105,000 boost. The Co-op’s Power to Change Community Share Booster Programme is prepared to match every pound raised by the Shotley Heritage Charitable Community Benefit Society, known informally as Shotley Pier Group, up to £100,000, and have also awarded them a £5,000 development grant to help put together the share issue. Put simply it means every £25 community share (or multiples thereof) bought by an investor will be matched by the booster programme up to £100k.…
