JPC Poster Winner

The John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, in partnership with the University of Suffolk, is thrilled to announce the winner of their poster competition.

From 28th January to 3rd February, the John Peel Centre is taking part in Independent Venue Week (IVW) for the third year running.

In 2018, taking part in Independent Venue Week bought national profile to the John Peel Centre when BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lemacq attended the emerge gig, which kicked of a jam-packed week of live music at the Stowmarket venue. emerge is one of the JPC’s flagship programmes which supports local musicians and provides a platform for local artists to perform live to an audience. In keeping with the ethos of the JPC, supporting emerging artists of all disciplines, JPC volunteer Steve Crooks approached University of Suffolk to run a competition for their Graphic Design students to design a poster for the events happening at the JPC during the high-profile week this year. The students were provided with a brief as they would in a professional setting and earlier this month Matthew Ranson was chosen as the winner and his poster is now out and about!

Steve Crooks, Freelance Designer and John Peel Centre Volunteer said “It was great to be able to offer the students a chance to participate. It’s crucial to their future prospects to have some commercial work in their portfolios when leaving university. It’s also very important to local bands to have designers who are prepared to get involved and help get the music out to a wider audience.”

Nigel Ball, Course Leader, BA (Hons) Graphic Design at the University of Suffolk said “Knowing the important cultural and community work the John Peel Centre does, when we were approached to see if we could offer this competition to our students we jumped at the opportunity. The relationship between music and graphic design has a long history and that this is being actively supported by the John Peel Centre and Independent Venue Week, demonstrates that cultural collaboration is very much alive and kicking in 2019. Congratulations to Matt for his winning entry”.

Sheila Ravenscroft, Patron and Director at the John Peel Centre said “We are absolutely delighted to provide opportunities that support emerging artists, Matts design is great and we are thrilled to have such fantastic and committed volunteers, such as Steve, to make this kind of thing possible.”

Matthews poster will be out and about in Suffolk, highlighting all the great events happening at the JPC during IVW so keep an eye out for it, or find out more by visiting the JPC website at www.johnpeelcentre.com
